By law, tyres in the UK must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, although evidence shows that stopping distance on a wet road significantly increases when tread depth falls below 3mm. A 3mm tread depth is the equivalent of a 10% reduction in braking distance on a wet road. Poor condition tyres can also lead to skidding or aquaplaning, both of which result in you having less, or no, control over your vehicle.
There are three main types of tyre: Summer, Winter and All-Season. Summer tyres are designed for dry conditions and are the most common type — as the temperature drops, so does their performance. Winter tyres are designed for cold and wet conditions; it is highly unlikely you will ordinarily require these in the UK. All-Season tyres offer a good compromise between the two.
